Apicoectomy in The Woodlands, TX - Woodlands Endodontics

What is an Apicoectomy?

An apicoectomy is a minor surgical procedure performed by an endodontist to remove the very tip of a tooth's root and the surrounding infected tissue. It's often referred to as a "root-end resection." This procedure is typically done after a conventional root canal treatment has failed and a re-treatment is not a viable option.

When is an Apicoectomy Indicated?

An apicoectomy is usually indicated when:

Persistent Infection: The infection or inflammation around the root tip continues after one or more root canal treatments.

Anatomical Issues: The root canal has complex anatomy, such as curved or blocked canals, that prevented the endodontist from cleaning the entire length of the canal during the initial root canal.

Calcified Canals: The canals are calcified, making it impossible to clean them thoroughly.

Undetected Canals: The endodontist suspects there is a small, undetected canal near the tip of the root that is the source of the persistent infection.

Biopsy Needed: The endodontist needs to perform a biopsy on the tissue surrounding the root tip to determine the nature of the infection.

TREATMENT

Apicoectomy

Surgical procedure to remove the root tip and surrounding infection, preserving the tooth when root canal alone isn’t sufficient.

The Benefits

The main benefit of an apicoectomy is that it can save a tooth that would otherwise be extracted. Other benefits include:

Targeted Treatment: It allows the endodontist to directly access and treat the source of the problem, which is often impossible with a conventional root canal.

Preventing Further Complications: By removing the infection at the root tip, an apicoectomy can prevent the infection from spreading to other teeth or into the bloodstream.

Long-Term Solution: A successful apicoectomy provides a long-term solution for persistent root canal problems, allowing the tooth to function normally for many years.

Retaining Your Natural Smile: The procedure helps you keep your natural tooth, which is always preferable to a dental implant or bridge.
