Sedation Options for Comfortable Care

Nitrous Oxide Sedation (Laughing Gas)

This is our most common form of minimal sedation, often referred to as "laughing gas." Nitrous oxide is a safe, colorless, and odorless gas that you breathe in through a small, comfortable mask placed over your nose. Within minutes, you'll feel a sense of relaxation and well-being. 

How it works: Nitrous oxide helps to reduce anxiety, increase your pain threshold, and makes time seem to pass more quickly. You will remain fully conscious, able to communicate, and in control throughout the procedure. 

The benefit: It's an excellent option for mild to moderate anxiety. The effects wear off almost instantly once the gas is stopped, allowing you to drive yourself home and resume your daily activities immediately.

Oral (Level 1 Conscious) Sedation

For patients with a higher level of dental anxiety, we offer oral conscious sedation. This involves taking a prescribed pill shortly before your appointment. This medication works to create a deeper state of relaxation, though you will still be awake and able to respond to our team.

How it works: The medication helps you feel calm and at ease, often leaving you with little to no memory of the procedure itself. The effects are more profound than nitrous oxide, making it ideal for patients who need more help relaxing.

The benefit: This option allows for a comfortable and relaxed experience. Due to the lingering effects of the medication, you will need a trusted friend or family member to drive you to and from your appointment.

IV Sedation with a Board-Certified Anesthesiologist

For patients with severe dental anxiety, extensive treatment needs, or special health considerations, we provide the highest level of in-office comfort and safety: intravenous (IV) sedation. This advanced service is administered and monitored by a board-certified anesthesiologist who joins our team for your procedure.  

How it works: The anesthesiologist administers sedative medication directly into a vein, allowing for a precise and carefully controlled level of sedation. This is often referred to as "twilight sleep" because you will be in a deeply relaxed state, but not fully unconscious. You will breathe on your own, but you will not feel or remember the procedure. 

The benefit: This is the most effective option for eliminating fear and discomfort. Having a dedicated medical professional manage your sedation allows our endodontist to focus completely on your treatment. The anesthesiologist's expertise ensures your safety by closely monitoring your vital signs throughout the entire visit. As with oral sedation, you will need a designated driver to take you home.
