In apexification, the canal is gently cleaned and disinfected, and then a biocompatible material, most commonly MTA (mineral trioxide aggregate), is placed at the open root tip to create a solid barrier. In some cases the procedure is completed in a single visit; in others, a medicated dressing is placed first and the barrier is completed at a follow-up appointment. The tooth is then restored and monitored as the surrounding bone heals.

01 Why can't my child just have a regular root canal?

A conventional root canal depends on the root having a closed, fully formed tip that can hold the filling material. In an immature tooth the tip is still open, so filling material would push past the root into the bone. Apexification creates the missing barrier first, making a secure seal possible.

02 What is MTA?

MTA stands for mineral trioxide aggregate, a biocompatible cement developed specifically for sealing root structures. It sets in the presence of moisture, is well tolerated by the body, and actually encourages the surrounding tissue to heal against it. It has become the standard material for procedures like apexification because of its long track record.

03 Is the procedure painful for my child?

No. The tooth is fully numbed with local anesthesia, and most young patients handle the visit very well. We work gently and explain each step in kid-friendly terms. Some mild soreness afterward is normal for a day or two.

04 How many visits will this take?

Often the barrier can be placed in one or two visits. If the canal needs extended disinfection, we may place a medicated dressing and complete the barrier a few weeks later. We will lay out the expected plan after the first examination.

05 What caused the tooth's root to stop developing?

A tooth's root continues forming for a few years after the tooth comes in. If the pulp inside is badly injured during that window, by trauma such as a fall or a sports injury, or by deep decay, root development can stop. The tooth is left with thin walls and an open tip, which is exactly what apexification addresses.

06 Will the tooth be weaker afterward?

An immature tooth that lost its pulp early does have thinner root walls than a fully developed tooth, which is why the final restoration and follow-up matter so much. With a proper restoration and sensible precautions, such as a mouthguard for sports, treated teeth can function well for many years.

07 Is there an alternative that helps the root keep growing?

In select cases, a regenerative endodontic procedure can encourage the body to rebuild vital tissue inside the canal and continue root development. Whether that option fits depends on the tooth's condition and stage of development. We evaluate every young tooth for regenerative potential before defaulting to apexification.

08 What happens if we do nothing?

An infected immature tooth will not heal on its own. Infection can spread into the surrounding bone, cause pain and swelling, and lead to early loss of the tooth, which in a growing child can affect alignment and jaw development. Early treatment protects far more than the single tooth.

09 How do you monitor healing afterward?
